Codex

Codex is an OpenAI coding agent that can work across a software repository, make changes and use development tools to check its work. It is particularly useful when a task needs more than a code suggestion and requires an understanding of how several files or systems fit together.

Where it fits

We use Codex for clearly bounded engineering work: tracing an unfamiliar implementation, preparing a change, fixing a regression, improving tests or carrying out routine maintenance. The agent is most effective when it receives the same things a developer would need—good context, acceptance criteria and a clear definition of done.

Working with appropriate checks

Agentic development does not remove the need for engineering judgement. Changes should still be reviewed, tested and assessed against the wider product. We pair Codex with repository instructions and verification steps so that speed does not come at the expense of maintainability.

Useful beyond the first build

The ongoing value is often in the less glamorous work: documentation, dependency updates, small fixes and keeping a codebase consistent as it grows. That makes Codex relevant to both new projects and established digital platforms.
